배수 표현
 
1. [이것은 크다]라는 표현을 알면 다음과 같은 표현도 쉽게 할 수 있다.

(a) 이것은 크다.
(b) 이것은 저것만큼 크다.
(c) 이것은 저것만큼 크지 않다.
(d) 이것은 저것보다 크다.

(a) This is large.
(b) This is as large as that.
(c) This is not as large as that.
(d) This is larger than that.

cf. (c)에서처럼 부정문에서는 not as... as를 not so...as로 바꾸어 쓸 수 있다.  

(c') This is not so large as that.  
(이것은 저것만큼 크지는 않다.)  

2. [이것은 저것만큼 크다]는 표현을 알면 [이것은 저것보다 두 배 더 크다]는 표현도 가능하다.  

(b') This is twice as large as that. (cf. This is as large as that.)

cf. 세 배, 네 배, 다섯 배, ...라고 말할 때는 배수사 twice (or  double) 대신에 three times, four times, five times, ...라고 하면 된다.  

3. 결론적으로, [--보다 몇 배 ...하다]고 할 때, [배수사 + as ... as]로 표현하면 된다. (반드시, 어순에 유의할 것.)
