It’s time to hit the road. (가야 할 시간이야.)
 
hit 은 ‘~을 때리다’  road 는 ‘길’이니 hit the road 를 직역하면 ‘길을 때리다’  ‘떠나다(leave)’입니다.  hit 에는 ‘~를 시작할 것을 의도하다’라는 뜻이 있어요.
친구 집에서 놀다가 늦은 듯 해서 What time is it now? “지금 몇 시냐?”라고 묻자 친구가 It’s a quarter to eleven. 이라고 합니다. 여기서 quarter 는 ‘15’이고
quarter to eleven 은 ‘11시로 가는15분' 이므로  '11시 15분 전’입니다.
It’s time to hit the road.  “가야 할 시간이네”라고 합니다.

A: What time is it now?
B: It’s a quarter to eleven.
A: Really? It’s time to hit the road.
B: Can’t you stay a little longer?

A: 지금 몇 시니?
B: 11시 15분 전이야.
A: 정말? 집에 가야겠네.
B: 조금 더 놀다가.
